Allowable stress values are provided in ASME Code Section II Part D. This part compiles material properties and, crucially, the temperature-dependent allowable stresses (S values) for each material. In design work governed by Section VIII Div 1, you use the S value corresponding to the service temperature to ensure stresses stay within permitted limits.

Section II Part A covers general requirements and broad properties, while Section II Part B and Part C list specific material properties for ferrous and nonferrous metals.
